The Cogito Academy of Leaders’ meeting – Krakow, 10-12 March 2017

The Cogito Academy of Leaders’ meeting consisted in three day-time sessions intertwined with breaks: Friday session (10. 03) and Saturday session (11. 03) were devoted to discussion, while the Sunday session (12. 03) was devoted to workshops aimed at preparation of the Manifest for the First Mental Health Congress in Warsaw.

On 2nd April 2017, moving-image material with members of the Cogito Academy of Leaders will be recorded. Also the invited guests will take part in the footage, among others Ms. Anna Dymna, Honorary Member of the First Mental Health Congress in Warsaw.

“How to support students in a mental crisis”

On 5 April 2017, at the Pedagogical Faculty at the Pedagogical University in Krakow, located at Ingardena 4, a conference “How to support students in mental crisis” was held, carried out in the framework of 10th Krakow Integration Days.

Panel Discussion 27th April 2017

Members of the Cogito Academy of Leaders took part in a panel discussion, organised by the Foundation “Without Door Handles” [“Bez Klamek”], Association “Other Way” [“Inna Droga”] and Student Research Club of the Psychology Faculty at the Jagiellonian University, that was devoted to the First Mental Health Congress and focused on a provocatively-formulated subject “In the hospital, or in the community”. The Event was inaugurated by Prof. Andrzej Cechnicki, together with a member of the Cogito Academy of Leaders, Barbara Banaś. During the discussion, a remarkable speech was given by Mateusz Biernat from the Cogito Academy of Leaders.

Within the framework of a project “The Cogito Academy of Leaders – increase in public involvement for persons with the disability of mental illness”, a series of seminars entitled “Let’s talk about mental illness…” and “To the rescue of the mentally ill…” has been started.

  • On 9thMarch 2017, the first seminar of the cycle „Let’s talk about mental illness…” was held for students of various faculties of Krakow universities. 17 members participated in the meeting, apart from two educators and one moderator. The keynote subject of the meeting was illness diagnosis, how the diagnosis had been communicated and subsequently intepreted and accepted by persons with a mental illness. Apart from that, members of the meeting were talking about the course of the illness and the treatment applied. The meeting took 4 training hours and at the end the students present at the meeting filled evaluation questionnaires.

 

  • The second seminar of the cycle „Let’s talk about mental illness…” took place on 27th March 2017. 17 members participated in the seminar. The meeting was led by two educators and one moderator. The theme which dominated the meeting was treatment, its quality, violence experienced by patients in hospitals, but also positive examples of good treatment and of a good, efficient, and effective therapy. The meeting took 4 training hours. At the end, the students present at the meeting filled evaluation questionnaires.

 

  • The third seminar of the cycle „Let’s talk about mental illness…” took place on 20thApril 2017. The meeting was organised, among others, by Students Association of the Psychology Faculty of the Jagiellonian University. 19 members participated in the seminar. There were two educators and one moderator conducting the meeting. Members talked shortly about diagnosis, while for the most part they brought up a topic of „good psychiatry” and positive examples of treatment within community psychiatry. The students filled evaluation questionnaires at the end of the meeting.

 

  • Subsequent, fourth seminar of the cycle „Let’s talk about mental illness…” took place on 18th May 2017. The meeting was organised, among others, by the Student Association of the Psychology Faculty of the Jagiellonian University. 17 members were present at the seminar. On the part of organisers, two educators and one moderator conducted the meeting. The main theme of the meeting was pharmacothepraphy and psychotherapy. After the seminar, the students filled evaluation questionnaires, and we obtained many positive comments regarding the meeting.

 

  • On 30th May 2017, the fifth seminar of the cycle „Let’s talk about mental illness…” was held. 17 students were present at the meeting. Two educators passed their knowledge about mental illness, while a moderator overwatched the whole event. Main focus of the meeting was treatment process, many a word have also been said about diagnosis, ways of communicating it by a medical pesonnel and how life changes after the information about the diagnosis has been conveyed. At the end of the meeting, students filled evaluation questionnaires.

 

  • On 5th June 2017, the sixth seminar of the cycle „Let’s talk about mental illness” was held. 22 participants were present at the meeting. On the side of organisers, there were two educators and one moderator. Students were particularly interested in life after a mental crisis, how it changes the daily life of people who experienced the crisis, how they copes with life, how often they have to see a psychiatrist, and if they still participate in psychotherapy, what are things that come easier and what are those that come harder to them. After the seminar, the students filled evaluation questionnaires, from which it was evident that after the meeting their perception of mentally ill persons has changed.

 

  • On 10thOctober 2017, the seventh seminar of the cycle „Let’s talk abut mental illness…” was held. 19 persons were present at the meeting. These were students of Krakow universities. The meeting was led by two educators and one moderator. Educators were interested in pharmacotherapy and the role of occupational therapy workshops. At the end of the meeting, the students filled evaluation questionnaires, in which they expressed positive opinions about qualifications of the persons conducting the seminar.

 

  • The eighth seminar of the cycle „Let’s talk about mental illness…” was held on 20th October 2017. The meeting brought together 21 participants – university students. It was led by two educators, while a moderator overwatched the whole event. Educators talked about their experience of a mental illness and methods which enabled them to overcome the crisis. The students asked many questions and at the end they filled evaluation questionnaires, in which they positively evaluated the course of the meeting.

 

  • The ninth seminar of the cycle „Let’s talk about mental illness…” took place on 27th October 2017. Apart from two educators and one moderator, 18 students participated in the meeting. Educators shared their illness-related experience and ways in which they are overcoming it. During this meeting, they focused on the role of the family and friends in the process of recovery. The students had many questions, they inquired about how they could be of help, how they should behave, when someone from their immediate environment becomes ill. At the end they filled evaluation questionnaires.

 

  • On 10th November 2017, the tenth seminar of the cycle „Let’s talk about mental illness…” was held. The seminar was led by two educators and one moderator. The educators shared with the group their story of mental crises and of overcoming the illness. They emphasised various centres of community psychiatry, which are helpful in coming out of the illness. The students, who came in a group of 18, expressed their interest, inquired what the prodromes of an illness are, how you can recognize that a mental illness is developing, and if one can prevent it in one way or the other. At the end they filled questionnaries, and gave a big clap to the presenters.

 

  • The eleventh seminar of the cycle „Let’s talk about mental illness…” was held on 21st November 2017. Traditionally, two educators and one moderator were conducting the meeting. The students came in a number of 18. The educators talked about what illness symptoms they had, and how they coped with it, minting it into a positive value. The students were very animated, they commented utterances of the educators, and showed their positive emotional approach towards the words of educators in the evaluation questionnaries they filled at the end of the meeting.

 

  • On 12th December 2017, the last, twelveth seminar of the cycle „Let’s talk about mental illness…” took place. 15 students from various Krakow universities participated in it, as well as two educators and one moderator. The educators presented stories of their illnesses and recovery, focusing on aspects showing what is helpful in overcoming the illness. The students showed their intrest, inquiring about details of specific events in the lives of educators. After the seminar, the students filled evaluation polls, expressing their positive opinions on the course of the meeting.

 

Within the project „The Cogito Academy of Leaders – increase in public involvement for people with the disability of mental illness”, a cycle of workshops entiled „To the rescue of the mentally ill …” was held:

  • On 24th April 2017, within the cycle of workshops „To the rescue of the mentally ill…”, a training was held on the topic „Professional and social rehabilitation of persons suffering from a mental illness”. Participants of the meeting were representatives of Social Care Centres, centres of integration and professional-social rehabilitation of people suffering from illnesses, parents and other representatives of the families. During the training, the coach Dorota Kurbiel presented model solutions of professional and social rehabilitation worked out in Krakow. 20 persons altogether participated in the meeting.

 

  • On 6th June 2017, within the cycle of workshops „To the rescue of the mentally ill…”, a training was held on the topic ”Social cluases and their impact on development of local communities”. 20 people participated in the meeting. The coach – Katarzyna Ostalecka – presented the topic of social clause application for economic development and cost reduction in the area of social care and the increase of the number of jobs for the mentally ill.

 

  • On 21st July 2017, within the cycle of workshops „To the rescue of the mentally ill…”, a training was held on the topic „Public-social partnership.” Workers of public institutions participated in the meeting, as well as representatives of NGOs, representatives of social firms, entrepreneurs, and representatives of families. During the workshops, good practices were presented in the scope of public-social partnerships, especially model solutions worked out by the Cogito Laboratory. 20 persons participated in the meeting.

 

  • On 24th August 2017, within the cycle of workshops „To the rescue of the mentally ill…”, a training was held on the topic „Social and professional rehabilitation of people suffering from mental illness”. The workshop was conducted by the coach Dorota Kurbiel. Representatives of Social Care Centres, centres of integration and professional and social rehabilitation of people suffering from illnesses, as well as family members of people suffering from mental illnesses, altoghether 20 persons.

 

  • On 20th October 2017, within the cycle of workshops „To the rescue of the mentally ill…”, a training was held on the topic „Public-social partnership”. The meeting gathered together the following receipients: public institutions’ workers, representatives of NGOs, representatives of social firms, entrepreneurs, and also members of families, altogether 21 persons. During the training, good practices were presented from the scope of public-social partnership, especially model solutions worked out by the Cogito Laboratory.

 

  • The last, sixth training of the cycle „To the rescue of the mentally ill…” was held on 28th November 2017. The subject of the meeting was „Social clauses”. At the meeting, application of social clauses for the economic development and reduction of costs in the area of social care were presented, as well as the increase in the number of jobs for the mentally ill. The receipients of the training were workers of public institutions on the level of municipality, district, voivodeship, and government. 20 persons participated altogether in the meeting, which was conducted by the coach Katarzyna Ostalecka.

Konskie 18th May 2017. Conference „How to support the mentally ill” – lecture entitled „Let’s talk about mental illness” was held by Katarzyna Leśniewska-Treywasz and Barbara Banaś, members of the Patients’ Association „Open the Doors” form Krakow and of the Cogito Academy of Leaders.

On 10th June in the Hotel „At Mr. Cogito’s” in Krakow, poetry soiree entitled „A walk with poetry” was held, organised by participants of poetry workshops led for people after mental crises by Professor Anna Pituch Noworolska. Pieces from the poetry collections „Image in the mirror” and „The reflection of heaven” were read by authors, among other members of the Cogito Academy of Leaders.
